Stir up your power, and come! The psalmist’s plea in Psalm 80:2 has become familiar to us in the Advent prayers. Isaiah wants God to rip the heavens open. Both cry out for an apparently distant, angry God to show up, to save, to restore. In Jesus, God did show up. In his baptism, the heavens were ripped open and the Spirit returned to God’s people. The very same Spirit entered our hearts in our baptism to gather us, enlighten us, and empower us to serve.
Today's Gospel: Mark 13:24–37
Other Readings: Psalm 80:1–7, 17–19 and 1 Corinthians 1:3–9
The Prayers This Week P In hope and expectation, let us pray for restoration and peace, light and life.
P Come down, O God, and give life to the nations of the world, that where there is strife and warfare, your peace will prevail, and where there is hatred and mistrust, your presence will restore. Stir up your power, O God; C stir up your power and come.
P Come down, O God, and give life to your church. Let the light of your holy word awaken your people to deeds of love and mercy, that all may know you are near. Stir up your power, O God; C stir up your power and come.
P Come down, O God, and give life to creation. May your handiwork in the heavens and the earth proclaim your glory even as we your creatures care for all that you have made. Stir up your power, O God; C stir up your power and come.
P Come down, O God, and give life to those who live in fear. For those whose strength is fading, who cannot sleep, and who struggle with chronic pain, draw near with your healing light. Stir up your power, O God; C stir up your power and come.
P Come down, O God, and give life to the ministries of this congregation. Keep us alert to the needs of the community beyond these walls, that with thankful hearts we would be strengthened to serve anyone in any need. Stir up your power, O God; C stir up your power and come.
P Come down, O God, and give life to all who grieve. Comfort those whose sorrows are deep, and reveal yourself to them through the care of friends and neighbors, that with all the saints we may all be gathered at your table of eternal grace. Stir up your power, O God; C stir up your power and come.
P You are with us, O God, and our spirits rejoice in your goodness, through Jesus Christ, our Savior. C Amen.
